A Little History:

Heat Shrink Tubing-Radiation Chemistry

The unique Heat Shrinkable properties result from the exposure of special thermoplastic formulation to high intensities of radiation.

With the advent of atomic energy after WWII, the important discovery was made that the exposure of some plastic materials to high energy penetrating radiation can cause the permanent cross-linking of inter-molecular joining of adjacent molecules. Once cross-linking has been accomplished, the material will not melt or flow at any temperature. Heat shrinkable products have perfect plastic memory and are supplied in an expanded condition. Upon the application of a heat source (heat gun) the tubing will shrink and grasp tightly to the object over which it has been placed, such as a wire, lug, terminal or connector. Heat shrink tubing acquires this special plastic memory feature as a result of radiation cross linking.
